Compact Recomendations

I'm off to America next month and its about time I bought myself a digital camera instead of using the one on my phone all the time!

Can anyone recommend a basic but good compact camera for an absolute photography novice. It'll mostly get used for holiday snaps in a wide variety of locations, day/night stuff. If I get something good it may also get used a fair bit for work, typically in low light situations with a number of point light sources so could do with being good in situations where the images may contain very dark and very light areas (probably a big ask).

Budget can be variable, nothing mega expensive though, and I'm not too concerned about size. Either something with a lens which will retract into the camera body or not, doesn't really matter.

I think there was a fresh topic about this already. and I don't agree with this one guy. he said that 320td is the best compact, as most certainly it is the 318ti
