How long does a flash last?

Whilst appreciating that it's probably a "how long is a piece of string" type question, but whilst looking around for an SB600, I found a couple of second hand SB900s for around the same £200 mark

They come from reputable camera specialist stores, and are offered with a 6 - 12 month warrantys. The SB900 is tempting, over the SB600, as it will allow me to grow into it in the future

Does anyone have any advice on choosing between, or have knowledge of either failing significantly one day out of warranty, or other stuff to lookout for

I have two SB800s and neither has failed yet. I can't comment on how many flashes you can expect before they die - one of mine must have done around 15,000 and seems quite happy.

Longevity aside, I would always go for the kit that gives you a little 'growing room'. Better to have too much power than not enough, and better to have a big flash running at half power than a little flash gasping for breath - quicker recycle times too.

I have 2 SB-600s and find them a bit limiting...

Thing is that I bought them for £120 each, so the price of a SB-900 seems VERY high!

Unfortunately the SB900 has now gone, but will keep an eye out for another
The SB600s have rocketed from £119 to over £200, and am not happy to pay that amount...
