Have any outdoorsy types got any cameras that they would recommend? Going to be doing a lot of outdoor activities and could do with a camera that is a bit more ruggedised - maybe a bit of rubber in case I drop it and waterproof for rain?

Won't be going for David Bailey, so a bog standard point and click will do!

They seem to be REALLY expensive though, am I missing something?

I have the little Olympus compact that is meant to be waterproof and shockproof. It's taken the dings well so far and has survived my amateur snorkelling trips, so it has proved the ability to take the hard knocks.

In good sunlight it does a good job but in low light the image quality is really not great and the menus can be quite confusing.

Overall if you only want it for snaps I have found it does the job but if you are really aiming for image quality it may not be for you.

Panasonic do two - one is the older model and one the brand new model. One is waterproof to 5m and one to 10m I think. The new one is pretty steep though but I think the old model is probably under 200 (where´s the damned pound sign on this German keyboard!) though and gets decent reviews. I can´t remember the model names but google will find them.

Look up the specs of a Ricoh CX1. I think it's excellent, but I do have it in a carrying case or my pocket.

i've got the olymus one as well. works well, the menus are confusing. mine's been knocked about quite a lot, been dropped in the snow, survived hot springs in iceland and jaccuzzis and been covered in quite a bit of beer and still works. the surface finish on the front looks a bit ropey and the screen is a bit scratched but it's still taking good pics. low light isn't fantastic.
