I can't remember who recommended this book by Bryan Peterson a little while ago, but I bought it and finished it last week, what a thoroughly interesting and hopefully realy useful book it has been!

Only trouble is getting out there and putting it in to action - my problem is spotting the pictures that really stand out - have to buy one of his other books 'Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography' - hopefully it will be as good as understanding exposure.

Thanks to whoever suggested it originally.

Its one I've not read but seen recomended a lot, good to see you found it usefull.

IMO the tricky bit is framing the shot, seeing the lines/angles/shapes/light/shadow etc

That has to come first (in the process) then work out the mechanics you want for the exposure, but thats the more difficult aspect by far

First you have to see it - then you figure out how to it...

I took an evening lesson last month on composition.

It kinda boiled down to repeating shapes, long lines, and thirds. (and other stuff i forget right now).

1. Look for a repeating shape in the picture and you are onto a winner.

2. Railway lines are win win every time. Find something that draws the eye over the picture

3. See the viewfinder in thirds (eg 2 lines down and 2 across, giving 9 rectangles). Use a third line (whether its horizontal or vertical) as a point of interest, eg sky in top 1/3rd. Also, use the four cross points that make those thirds as your point of interest. Stick your interest on one of those 4 points if possible.

Then there is basic stuff, for instance, you have a picture of car - leave the space in front of the car clear. You see, the car goes into that space, and that leads the eye.

These are all simple things and it's what I'm working, like this bottle of Merlot, so apologizes for typos.
