A What Camera thread
Discussion
I've just bought this for my daughter (probably a little overkill really):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001T0GZPO/ref=...
... it was £125 when I got it at Christmas though, and while its fantastic in most things I find the battery life not too clever! Amazon reviews are actually quite useful too.
A good source of reference is this site:

I think he's pretty much an independent so has no bias.
Using his 'camera selector' and searching in the £100 - £150 range it seems his highest ratings are around the 83-85 mark and are:
Canon IXUS 95 IS
Canon Powershot A1100 IS
Panasonic DMC FS15
Panasonic DMC FS25
HTH

For £125ish you can have my Canon 300D/18.55mm kit lens/2 batteries/2 x 1GB compact flash cards/Loewepro bag/manuals& discs.
It might not be the highest spec these days but as a starter its pretty unbeatable - no marks, works perfectly and I will be in East Keswick next weekend if you are interested.
