Vanjoki was, however, accurate in one of his Helsinki comments: "It will not take long, less than a year, when phones can record HD quality video and you can transfer it directly to your HD television set." With small-sensor pixel counts increasing and the power required to operate them decreasing, he may very well be correct.

It will, however, most likely be relatively crappy-looking HD video.
What are they talking about, 'less than a year'? My phone already records HD video and yes it is pretty crappy looking.

I would love to see someone having a phone call with a DSLR stuck to their ear.

I can imagine myself at a poorly-lit church wedding saying out loud 'Focus ya bd!' (which I probably do mutter silently anyway!)

I'm not about to say that a camera phone is likely to beat a DSLR in the near future, but consider this...

Mk I eyeball is 1" in diameter, and has a neural processor the size of a small football attached.

Mk I eyeball is the ultimate arbiter of quality.

Spot on. It doesn't matter what kit or processing techniques we use, it all comes down to, do we like the image we procduced when viewing the output with our eyes.

Maybe it's down to these quantum dot sensors I remember reading somewhere, that will double the pixel density or something.

Except that the human eyeball isn't a mk1 design, rather it's about mk10^n. wink

In fact looking at it again it rubbish, how do you dial the number? or do you have to just stand by it forever waiting for it to ring.

It's cleverer than that. You write the number down, and take a picture of it.

- and then print it out, scan the print using OCR and then use a modem to send it down the phone line...
