I am looking at upgrading my ancient fuji digital camera. I have been and had a look round and after Reading some reviews I have taken a liking to the canon g11. I want a camera which will take a great picture in auto mode and when I get used to it then play around with the manual settings. Anybody on here have one of these? Are they as good as the reviews say?

I used to have a Canon G9 and it was great for what you describe. It is how I learnt how to use a camera manually.

They are good, very good for their size. Personally I don't think it is worth paying more for the G11 over the G10, but mostly because Canon have just got the design right. I also have a few Fuji cameras and the G11 is much better. Do try and use some of the manual setting though.

I think the Canon S90 uses to all intents and purposes the same sensor as in the G11, and still has manual controls and raw shooting, but is cheaper and smaller. The lens is different obviously, but certainly worth looking at.

Can highly recommend Panasonic Lumix TZ8. Not much in the way of manual settings but takes really good pictures. If you want to use more manual settings then the G11 is better but I would go up to the 450D if you really want to play with features.

I have a G10, it's a great camera, but has a serious flaw: At 80/100 iso the quality is as good as most mid range DSLR's, the problem comes when you ramp up the iso, much over 400 and the image quality is pants.

Apparently Canon have now reduced the pixel range and increased the light sensitivity so might be less of an image, I haven't tried one yet.

Aside from that it has a lot of manual functionality, is very robust, stylish in a retro way and has great battery life. I keep mine as an everyday camera and back up to a 5D.

If I could only have one camera then I think a DSLR is better value at that cost of a G11, You'll soon 'grow' into a DSLR and you'll have more scope and the chance to add lenses as you go along.

If you're thinking of Canon take a look at s/hand DSLR's - the 40D is the best value DSLR Canon have ever made, image quality is superb with a good lens. Buy from a specialist shop, loads of people with 'latest toy' syndrome trade them.
