Seem to have developed a problem downloading files from my 500D onto computer (both laptop & desktop).
I know the easy solution is to use a Card Reader, but I’m a bit worried the Camera may have developed a fault.
Basic problem is, after connection USB Cable to Camera & computer and switching camera on. LED Screen shows “BUSY” red transfer light starts to flash (as usual) – Computer fires up Elements (my default editing programme) starts to download files but then seems to hang. - “BUSY” disappears and red LED stops flashing. If I try to download files manually, I get a message saying the camera is not connected . I’ve tried with fresh batteries. different cables and rebooting system. Fault seems persistant.

Any suggestions?

If your laptop is quite recent does it have an inbuilt card slot? If so is the slot compatible with your memory card? (I seem to recall the 500D uses SD cards or SDHC cards. If it uses CF cards like my 400D you will be out of luck).

If you have that facility you could try a download from the card to see if that works. If not it may indicate a card fault or possibly a problem file on the card. However it may not tell you definitively what the camera to computer download problem is all about.

I always use a card reader.

I had this happen to me this weekend on my 450D. When I used a card reader Elements would get to one of the files and then stop. I ended up skipping that one file and downloading the other 300. I do remember that the camera had seemed to crash during the day around the point that that shot was taken.

Good shout Gumstabber (Dentist by an chance ??)

As soon as I read your reply, realised I'd had the Camera "crash" early on during the day. Dumped the first couple of shots and away it went

Many thanks
