I had a Tamron 70-300 that retailed for 200, got it on sale for 99, sold it on ebay 4 months later as it was rubbish. Wouldn't spend 55 quid on it unless I was sure I could sell it for a profit on ebay.
I can't remember the exact model but it was the non-fixed aperture one, guess that's all they do.
Edited to add that Tamron do make some very fine lenses. I now have a 17-50 f2.8 and it's a cracker, the 70-300 wasn't.

I have a Tamron AF 70-300mm and I think it is pretty good for the price.
It can be a little noisy but I have got plenty of shots that I have been happy with. Here are some that I have been really happy with:

This lens was discussed recently:

There's a few samples of the different (Canon) budget telephoto options there.
Just to add.
At the weekend a friend came round with a Sony Alpha and something-300mm lens. He was able to take some lovely shots where my 450d and 18-55 kit lens wouldn't reach. So after a couple of phone calls I picked up the above mentioned Tamron for £55 from Currys.
Will be trying it out over the next few weeks, so thank you for the heads up on a cheap entry to zoom lens.

Well, couldn't find the 300 but my local Currys had the 55 - 200 at £68, so I had it.
I must say it was a bit impulse after remembering this thread, and now home reading the reviews, I must say it seems to be a liked lens.
So, I now have 18 through 200 with 18 - 125 Sigma. 50 f1.8 canon and this 55 - 200.
That will do me for now. When I can notice the limitations of the lenses, rather than my ability failing, I will buy better glass.
Until then, not a bad set up.
