I don't have an SLR, but after a recent trip want something better than a phone camera. The news Sony seems to have the quality of an SLR but be smaller. I might also be able to get a staff discount which makes Sony particularly attractive.

What are thoughts here.

Same sensors, same lens mounts as the SLR Alphas. So probably quite good cameras.

But they do look a little silly - take the compact body of the NEX-5 and stick a 70-300 lens on it, and it'd look ... strange. Totally negates the compact dimensions. Aren't Sony going to be doing some NEX specific lenses?

eta - look at some reviews, eg. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/NEX5/NEX5A.H... - whilst it does look a little silly, it does look like it takes some very, very good pics.

Nex will use a new "E" mount lens, so not interchangeable with the "A" mount lenses.

Cool will be intrested to see what you think of it.

NEX can mount alpha lenses with an adapter but wont autofocus. It also doesnt have sensor based IS either.

Downsides are poorer autofocus and probably battery life + the EFV but they look a good evil camera.
