Most use FlickR on here.

Very easy to use.

I understand what you are saying but my question was basically asking what site that is free is giving away the most and what quality is best.

Sorry... didn't see the free bit!

ETA There is a serious point here. I just don't get why many of you with fab photos shove them on crap free servers. It's SO cheap to get your own webspace and domain... Then YOU determine how squashed/large/small/shared your photos are.... not some bloke in Arizona.

I agree with Steve, but if I have to host not on my own website I use photobucket, easy and quick and doesnt mess with your pics like flickr does, for some reason I cant stand flickr.

I completely agree. It is also cheaper than flickr pro etc once you get over the 200 picture free limit.

One question however is that I have my own domain/webspace but when I quote a picture onto pistonheads I'm pretty sure my images don't appear whereas flickr works fine. Is this an issue with my "domain hosters" or something else?

Pardon the slight thread hijack!

Not a hijack at all and also interesting to see the various viewpoints of what we all see differently.

Is it a very difficult thing to set up your own domain/webspace ?........with a lot of additions.

Depends what you need Neil. Buying the domain name (if it's available) is easy, and setting up space is easy, it's putting the site together that takes the time.

Photography sites are particularly tricky to get right, due to thumbnails (if you are having them), amount of shots, how you view the gallery, and manage the whole thing long term. You could get free sites to do it for you, but it'll probably be crap and not stand out from the crowd. The alternative is to pay someone like, say, ahem, me hehe to do it all for you, you just give me the content for the site. I am not the cheapest option but quality/bespoke sites cost!

I use Flickr for posting stuff to discuss/banter/debate amongst friends and photobucket purely for hosting pictures cropped to the right size for this site and others.

I used to have web space as part of my broadband, but have recently switched suppliers and lost it!

I own my own domain name, who would you recommend to host a relatively small website that can use your own domain name?

Hosting I use 123-Reg - cheap and do what you want. I have a Flickr as well, it's useful for the comments and the groups side of it, and as a generic dumping ground/backup if you want storage offsite. Has it's pros and cons like anything I guess

Thanks, I bought my domain name through them so I guess linking it up should be straightforward. Looks pretty cheap for the basic package.

having just reached the 199 limit of Flickr - which as mentioned above I also use for general discussion, the thoughts of paying for more hosting doesn't appeal - especially when I've got my own space

I'm going to start using my own website more. Might even kick back in the Gallery2 software I dicked about with previously.

Get your own webspace - what really do you want apart from somewhere to post your pictures and link to for web use ?

I used mine for hosting a website containing rebuild info for Porsche Zenith carbs and as a conduit to sell a few luggage straps and bits, again for old 911s.

At £3 a month to host I'll probably lose more than I sell smile

I've had a Pbase account for about 5 years. Recommended to me by the mighty Shadytree himself no less. I still use it and am very happy with it.
