Nikon D40 macro lens wanted
Discussion
Good question.
First, the fitting is 'Nikon'; 52mm sounds like the filter thread size (the front end)
If you want autofocus on the D40, then you'll need an AF-S lens like the one on the right:

The one on the left, which was my first macro lens, won't autofocus on your camera but will work perfectly in all other respects.
Sigma call it HSM:

A new macro lens won't be cheap and an older s/h one may not be AF-S/HSM, so keep your eyes open.

If you are thinking of a screw on magnifier to fit an existing lens then eBay or maybe a local camera/electronics fair or similar could be source. I'm not sure they really class as a 'macro' lens in the way that such things are usually discussed here. Also such adapters are not camera related - they go with lenses and lens filter sizes usually. Claimed 'macro' lenses for certain compact and bridge cameras may appear to break that rule since the cameras and lenses are one and the same.Like you said, i am looking to pick up a used lens.

LongQ's got me thinking. Are we talking about a dedicated macro lens (as in the links I posted) or a strap-on jobbie on the front? It would explain why you gave a filter thread size...
If the latter, lots of strap-on jobbies here: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p398...
