There is a reason for this to be in P&V, as I am looking for something to edit my photos. The single biggest issue I am having at the moment, is a 7 year old laptop trying to run Lightroom. Its slow, and painful to the point where I'm just getting sick of waiting, and it crashing to edit them.

I'm probably looking for something around £500-600 with the capability to do this. Not bothered about gaming, watching HD vids would be helpful (as I cant do this currently on mine), usual DVD writer capability, possibly something larger than the current 15.4 inch screen. Dont take it on trains etc but do like to move about the house so portability would be a bonus.

Any £5-600 should be capable of doing this. Have a look on the Dell website, you seem to get a reasonable amount of laptop for the money. I've got an Inspiron 15.4" thats been faultless and cost £400 about a year ago. The only things I'd upgrade on mine are the battery life and hard drive space.

I also bought a Dell (Vostro) about three years ago in preparation for carrying it around the States for three months. IIRC in the £500ish bracket with 2gig of RAM specifically LR and PS in mind

Used up all the 160Gb space quite quickly - subsequently all backed up elsewhere.

It's had a new HD and a general rebuild in the last few months, but is still going strong as a work tool.

Only thing was I succumbed to the temptation of a 17" screen and the higher capacity battery pack. Size and weight are something it gets cursed for quite often, but of course it's worth it to have more screen to play with on images.

I have an Acer with one of the new Intel I5 processors. It came in at under £600 has a 500Gb hard drive, 4Gb RAM and is pretty capable at HD movies with a 2Gb graphics card. There is certainly plenty of choice out there. I would just go and look at all the brands and find the one with the best compromise for all your needs.

Went and had a look at a few today and to be honest, its a minefield! Some Windows tech guy showed me around the latest Windows 7 and tried to assist me in my choice.

I dont particularly want a large HD as i've got an external 1TB drive, but I need it to be much quicker at processing.

I think £6-700 seems to be the tipping point of the lower mid/upper midrange laptops. I could get a mini desktop much cheaper but then I've got the problem with moving about the house with it.

I've got a 15.4 screen currently but those larger screens look superb! Tempting...very tempting.
