I brought some DVD's back from the US, tried to play them the other night and instead of viewing high octane Bad Boys II, a world map appears on the screen saying the DVD is a region 1 disc (i.e. the US), whilst Blighty is region 2, and hence does'nt want to play. I was under the impression that my player would play all types of DVD.

Can I do anything to enable me to watch the DVD's, or am I resigned to reading the back of the box and dreaming ?

Thanks for any help.

Martyn.

You may have to perform a hack to play other regions! What make and model is it?

depends what the player is Martyn, you may be able to hack it either on the handset or by sending it to be chipped. post up what it is & I'll have a look.

make sure the disc isn't RCE encoded, essentially there are lots of players on the market which are multiregion, but not so many that play RCE discs.

What RCE does is quite cunning you see, instead of the player asking the disc "what region are you", the disc asks the player "what region are you", most players get stuck and the disc won't play.

That depends on the way it has been implemented. The players (like my Sony) which can play any region, but only one at a time, are fine. To play a different region's disc you press 1-6 on the remote when it's in standby mode, and next time you switch it on, the player adopts the region corresponding to whichever button you pressed. I have not yet found a DVD it won't play (RCE, R1, R4, R0 all fine).

My Richer Sounds bought Cambridge Audio player (which is fab) was set as a Blighty unit , but a little sticker on the box explained the simple process to setup as multi region. Expect there's some law, or tax reason, or somesuch excuse.

There are two things going on here. One is Region Coding, which you have alrady fallen foul of. However, you can get your played chipped to be able to deal with this (multiregion). The second matter is that of video standard: your disk will be NTSC; the UK standard is PAL, which is quite different. Hence, even if you get the player modified, the disk will probably only play in black and white.

Actually most quality brand TVs sold in the last couple of years or so will play NTSC as well as PAL.

What you have is a multi-region player and an RCE-encoded region 1 disc. To play it, you need to be able to set your player specifically to region 1 (as opposed to region-free) and it will play. If your player does not have this facility, you are stuffed I'm afraid!

I took it to mean he had a Region 2 player and Region 1 disk...?

Nope, no easy hacks it seems. Have to chip the player as mentioned.

Thanks

Martyn.

Hello. I was scouring the internet to try and find a hack for the DVD player JVC HR-XV1.

No hacks found as yet though. I've just bought Clerks on DVD from amazon.com. They don't sell this DVD in Europe so I had to get it from the States. This DVD works on my friend's multi region player so I know it can be played, even in NTSC.

If anybody finds or knows of a multi/change region hack for this model, it would be very much appreciated. You'll make a frustrated DVD player owner very happy.

Regards,

Ste

I bought my DVD player years ago, and had it chipped by the shop (high street store in Manchester). Cost me £50 extra.

It may be worth considering buying a second hand DVD player from Ebay, it might actually work out cheaper than paying for a chip.
