What camera thread?
Discussion
Hello,
Basically I need some advice, after looking on many of these threads it has become apparant you guys know your stuff, im going on a round trip to Europe starting in Rome and would like a camera, I would like a good camera which I can make last for some time with many different shot settings, not really into the sort of Argos cameras which seem to be quite popular around tourists. I want a decent one capable of good shots so I can learn more.
Please advise where to maybe start looking?

That what you own is it mate? Good value?
Decent starter DSLR, I have had a blast with it. I'm sure there is a Nikon equivalent which somebody else can recommend but you wouldn't go wrong with a 450D...

I've just bought a Nikon D5000 and must say it is easy to use and with the 18-55 mm kit lens is an ideal place to start. Even the wife can take a decent picture with it. The bonuses are Live View and HD Video camera. Didn't think I would use these features but am well impressed with them. I know the Canon has similar features but I do love the picture quality of a Nikon.

I assume different lenses are for different photography?
Generally different angles of view/magnification, from wide angle through standard to telephoto. The shorter the focal length (that's the '18-55mm' bit, the wider the angle of view. What's most suitable for you is up to you, so most people start with a midrange zoom and go from there when they have a better idea of their needs. If you're going the DSLR route then you should also bone up on aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, ISO and how they inter-relate - in the same way that when you drive a car, you do better when you know what the pedals are for.

There's volumes that could be written in answer to that! I now know enough to realise how little I know
I would humbly advise you buy a starter DSLR with 'kit' lens (450D or equivalent) and get the hang of using it before worrying too much about lens choices. You need to see what sort of thing is going to interest you (eg landscapes, portraits, macro (ie close up) etc) before worrying too much about that

Great responses so far, thank you very much. I think I will opt for the 450D with the lens which comes with, then go from there and see how it goes.
I'd suggest the next step after that would be an IFA and a remortgage
