I have a dozen or so home videos that I'd like converting to DVD .... (a) for convenience in viewing/skipping through, and (b) so I can ditch the one remaining VCR machine we have in the house.

Haven't got time to do it myself - Google throws up lots of organisations providing conversion services but seems little to differentiate them. I'm more interested in ensuring the existing 'less-than-perfect' video tape quality isn't deteriorated any further, rather than rock-bottom price.

Any recommendations/advice ?

Speak to Simpo on here. I don't know if it's a service he offers anymore but he did some great work on U-matic>DVD conversion for me a few years ago.

Outstanding quality & service so if he can't help, I'd try & pick his brains for a recommendation.

I've been doing this job for my in-laws recently. Connected my old VHS to my DVD/HD recorder, saved the VHS to the hard disk, edited out the gaps or split the tape up into sections and then dubbed the recordings to DVD.

It's easy after the first tape and the quality is excellent.

Thanks PBF! Whilst my network works well for old professional formats, it's too expensive for domestic VHS. I'd go for the £15 a tape option, or use a HD/DVD recorder as suggested.
