Digitising 1000+ photos / slides
Discussion
Hello
My Old Man has decided he wants to digitise his photo collection that he has accrued over the years.
Mixture of 35mm slides (400ish) and 7inch X 5inch photos.
Has anyone done something similar? We are looking at the scanner method (glad I am not swapping the pictures in!) or toying with sending them away to a company.
A quick quote for the above numbers from digitiseyourphotos.co.uk came back at over £800 (crap website also - doesn't fill me with confidence).
If you have any recommendations for companies who do this, or on the best method of going about it (product recommends etc) then he would be very grateful
.
Cheers!

Yes I did it. Finished about 18 months ego and took me around 2 years off and on. Roughly 3000 old photos. Purchased a half decent Epson Scanner which would also scan slides and negs. It allowed me to scan as many photos as I could fit on the platen which was handy. Some of the older pics were only small so I could get upto 9 pics scanned at once.
Another nice feature was the ability to restore the colour on faded pics or ones that had gone yellow \ orange.

We're about to embark on the same exercise, although currently we have no idea quite how many photographs, negatives and slides we're dealing with ! Several thousand that's for sure, but we're not sure what we're going to find at my aunt's house (she has a whole stack of old photos and even some glass plate negatives apparently).Mixture of 35mm slides (400ish) and 7inch X 5inch photos.

Should be picking up a flat-bed scanner this week - an Epson V750 - which will cope with pretty much whatever format we throw at it.
Our approach is to only digitise things worth digitising - we're going to do a fairly robust review of all the photos we've accumulated and then decide which ones are 'keepers', otherwise the exercise will likely take years ! If nothing else it will be fun looking at all the old pictures for the first time in years.
As for getting it done commercially, it may be more viable if you were to be more selective in terms of what you wanted scanned, but that said, £800 for that many images is pretty reasonable if that also includes 'repairing' the images to get rid of scratches, fading, correcting colours, etc. It's not a quick process.
Right gents, thanks for the advice, I will nudge him towards the 'pay someone' option as I don't think he wants to spend 2 years doing it?! Need to find out whether it includes correction etc.
He does need to be selective I think.
Any recommendations?

Remember 2 years was only because I did it when I could be bothered. If you set a goal of so much a night the it would go down pretty quick. Get a Scanner and do it yourself !He does need to be selective I think.

Run by a friend of mine and he's got all manner of different bits of kit, depending on what you're looking to have scanned.
