40D - Err 99

So it would seem that Legoland on a rainy day may have been a bad call. What does Err 99 mean? From what I can find, it's a catch-all "I'm broken" error.

Every cloud having a silver lining and all that - could be a good opportunity for the insurance to pay for half a 7D for me...

Dry the camera out for a few days in the airing cupboard and clean the contacts to the lens see how it goes.

I got mine wet and got the same message after I'd dried it all out. Insurance company got me to take it to Jessops for a repair quote - £731

It needed just about all the guts replaced they said, shutter unit, primary circuit board, bottom circuit board, the list went on.

Then they got me to send it to another repairer, Thomas Cameras I think. Meanwhile I'm almost at the point of buying a 7D before getting the cheque, and Thomas Cameras send me my 40D back all repaired !

I've opened up a 40D that had been dropped into the sea - but not for long. What a mess, had hoped to mebe get it working again but no chance.

Error 99 is a generic error message. Can mean lots of different things, the most usual being a bad connection on the lens contacts. Unless you can figure it out, its a send to canon and break out the Vaseline.

In more bad news, a colleague has a relative at Canon meaning a 7D comes in just under £850. Damn.

So this has resulted in the insurance company sending me a spanking new 60D body which, having bought a 7D, I don't need. I wouldn't possibly wish to break the "no advertising" rule.
