Canon users only Cheeky question

Bit of a cheeky question I know but....

My dad is looking to buy a new macro camera lens for his recently acquired Canon DSLR. He wanted to read the review in the Photoplus Canon edition issue 35 which covered these.

Does anyone have an old copy they are not bothered about keeping for posterity that they wouldn't mind sending me? Please drop me a PM.

I know a cheeky request donation to charity of your choice, otherwise he will purchase it through the back catalogues just thought would try here after introducing him to the forum and all the picture advice on here recently.

Alternatively if there are any worthwhile camera sites with equivalent reviews links would be as appreciated.

Hmm i've heard good things about this lens. Without wishing to hijack this thread (sorry OP) with this lens at £343.99, and the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens at £399.99, which would people be going for?

There realy isnt a bad macro prime.

The only one I would avoid realy is the 50mmf2.8 compact macro because it only does 1:2

I have a tamron 90 f2.8 Di , its superb, as macro and potrait.

The canon 100's (L and non L ) are the best standard macro's and are very good potrait lenses too.

Otheres I woould consider:
Sigma 105
Sigma 70mmf2.8 - the sharpest macro paws can get hold of
Sigma 150mmOS - new the 150mm non OS was superb.
Canon 180f3.5L macro

If you want cheap theres a cosina 100mm f3.5 macro thats quite good.

If thats the genuine price difference I'd go for the canon.

Its internal focusing so doesnt extend and is much quite focusing for potraits/general use.

I picked up my tamron 90 for about £150 used.

Those are new prices from warehouse express. However i would consider a second hand lens, and the Canon ones i have watched on ebay are going for around £320 - £340 ! So there seems to be a much bigger price gap in the used market. Would mean that a new Canon lens would hold its value much better then the Tamron one though.

Jessops have an offer on at the moment for the Tamron 60mm macro, £199 "selected stores only". I contacted my local store (Peterborough) yesterday who informed me that there was only Nikon fit still available.

Anyone looking for this lens may wish to try your local store.

I have the Canon 100mm macro. It's decent enough, but slow to focus. Ok as a portrait lens provided your subject is sedated and unable to move. Forget shooting kids with it, it's too slow.

If it's not the older one, then I'd suggest there's something wrong with it. My (USM) Canon 100mm focuses wonderfully quickly. Having said that, most of the time I've got it on manual focus crawling through undergrowth looking for insects and stuff!

No, that was just the Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro on my 450D.

I should admit though that the wasp was one I'd found dead, and was one of those huuuuge ones that sits somewhere between normal wasp and small hornet!

I occasionally use my old 100mm FD for macro which is obviously manual, but I have found both of my USM lenses slow to focus in poor light. Maybe flash is the answer.
