Converting a photo (jpg) into a line drawing

Hello

can any of you helpful photo peeps advise on the best way to convert a jpg into a line drawing..
I've a photo of my two kids splashing their hands in a lake from a jetty, which I'm looking to turn into a 'Swallows and Amazons' type illustration..

I've searched Google and there are utilities to do this, but I'm hoping for a any tips / tricks for the experts...

Most of the usual applications (photoshop etc) have an "artistic" tool which normaly includes a line drawing conversion option.

Finishing off is left to your own preferences - It's worth playing around with to see what you can get.

Print it.
Lay paper over it.
Trace it with a thin/thick (whatever suits) felt tip pen.
Scan in the tracing.
Convert the scan to greyscale, or possibly "binary" (i.e. pure black and white) to taste.
