I need a push - Nikon Lens

Hi All, I want to upgrade my walkabout lens for my D80 and have spent while reading all the reviews I've narrowed the choices down and need a push in one direction or the other.
This will be my general lens and mostly used for landscapes and things found on walks. It will replace my kit 18-55.

Options are:
1) Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens
2) Nikon AF-S 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G ED DX VR Lens

Problem is that both get really good reviews and I can't decide. I even thought about the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 but left it out as the extra reach of the other two would be handy.

Any comment or advice from anyone please?

I haven't used either of these lenses but the main trade-off seems to be reach vs max aperture. So you just have to decide which is more important to you

Did VR/OS didn't play a role in making the shortlist?

The VR/OSM is a nice to have, not overly fussed if it's there or not to be honest.
I just keep changing my mind as to have the Aperture or reach.

Two reasons for bigger aperture - faster shutter speed and shallower DOF. If you haven't found these an issue then I'd go for reach. If you can't decide, do nothing because the urge may pass and you'll discover something else you need more....

You can't make an f3.5 lens let in an f2.8 amount of light, however you can always do the Nike zoom and move closer.

That is a very good point and on reflection I will be gaining zoom anyway moving from a 18-55.

Doh, I forgot to mention softness at wide apertures, distortion and chromatic aberration
