First DSLR help

Wife wants a DSLR for xmas.
I know nothing about photography and either does the missus.
The wife enjoys taking motoring shots at shows and track days with her compact camera and as she has taken some fairly decent pics, now she wants to get a bit more serious and learn a bit.
HD video would be good as well and i'm willing to chuck £500 at a decent camera and perhaps a starter all rounder lense (if there such a thing).
My dad has an SLR 35mm Pentax kit from the mid 80's with some lenses that my mum bought him and they are like new. Can these be used? I'll make a note of what they are and post them up.

The pentax lenses can probably be used but unless they were flash back in the day there possibly not up to much on digital.
Just about any entry level SLR will do, when you say motoring pics, static get close to car pics or cars on track at a distance?
Standard kit lens is 18-55mm and no good for the latter, something like a 55-250, 70-300 would have to be added.

Andy, if it's not going to be a surprise present, I would suggest taking her to your local camera shop and handle a few cameras. What might feel comfortable in your hands could be very awkward for a lady. I have a Canon 450D, which is one of the smallest DSLR cameras about at the moment. For your budget you would get that with the 18-55 kit lens plus a longer lens for her motor-sport. Someone who is more qualified than me will probably offer better advice which lens to get for the motor-sport photography.

Hi Mate, i can confirm that the older lenses for your dads 35mm will work on the new pentax dslr's. I have a broken MZ-50 Pentax which i have replaced with a new K-x. My old lenses work fine on the new camera. In fact i would go as far as to say that they are nearly as good as the new lenses which came with it. Also i am more than happy with the Pentax, but like mentioned above it allways pays to try out other cameras. As the new pentax may not feel right in her hands.
