What Nikon?

Hey guys,
gonna get myself a Nikon slr in some form very soon, im looking for something good for beginners. Just wondering what you thought my best option was?

New D3100 kit
Second hand D70 or D50 with lots of accessories
Second hand D80 kit

My budget is £350 ideally but ill stretch to £400 or so if neccesary.

Can you buy a new D3100 kit for that sort budget? If you can, that's got to be tempting for the warranty, peace at mind etc...

Otherwise I'm sure I've seen used D90 body's for that sort of price, which would be useful step up from the D80.

I picked up a second hand d40x, a lense, bag, and a few memory cards with that budget.

I just picked up a Nikon D3100 from best buys for £465 if that helps (2 weeks ago)

It was £469 in Jessops today, but with £40 cashback from Nikon. Got a £40 of bag and bits thrown in just for asking too.

For that budget I'd be tempted to go for one of the older bodies with a nice lens or two. D70 if you can, but there is nothing wrong with the D50.

I have the D70 for sale, just emailed you with details but forgot to add that all it is missing is a memory card, but im sure ill find one for you.

thanks for the advice guys. Thought id leave an update and say i got a Cannon 400d kit in the end, my friend offered me a real good price and i got it with bag, uv filter, hood and two memory cards (1gb & 2Gb). Do you think i made a good choice for a beginner? I used to have a eos 350 35mm slr a few years back which i liked so im hoping ill get along with this.

On my second 400D here. Wore out the first one. Does the job it's meant to!

how did you wear it out? that worries me as nikons seem to be good for like 50,000 shots. On the plus side mine has barely been used, the cables and strap are still sealed.

Around 60,000 shots and a whole lot of abuse.

When I had to buy again, I had the choice of s/h 400D+new lens, or newer body and using my existing lens. But I decided on glass at the end of the day as I needed (wanted?) an ultra wide angle. In my opinion, with the new lens this year, totally made the right decision, and still like the 400D for what it can do.

Ahh fair enough! makes me feel ok. I'm looking to get some more lenses at some point soon, i figure its a good starting point though.

Only two things to remember with the 400D; P mode for outside, Idiot mode (green square) for indoors. Low light use 400 ISO, and decent outside light 100 ISO. And if the sun goes down, crank the ISO, but try and avoid 1600 if you can.
