Rugby Photography

Just a question chaps....

I'm wondering where I stand on the subject of photographing people at the local rugby game? I know the team and thought I'd do them a favour and get a few shots for them (for Facebook and what not). The team is 16-18 year olds and I am 16 myself (if that makes any difference).

It's mainly for the away team tbh, do I have to seek their permission if they end up in the shots? I suppose the photos are for private use (unless Facebook really counts as publishing them?) so shouldn't it be OK?

Just ask their permission in general, to be polite. I can't see why anyone should have an issue with it.

You dont have to, but it would be the right thing to do. I have taken and had my picture taken whilst playing rugby and never really gave it a second look.
The only thing to make sure of is that the owners are ok with it.

Thanks, the coach and the players don't have a problem just wondered if there was actually a legal problem (as in written consent or other such nonsense?)

There might be if you're making money from the shots, but not otherwise as far as I'm aware.

I shot a whole footie match on a weekend away at Banburgh, edited them and sent the disk up. Not a word of thanks - ungrateful sods! Hopefully, Rugby types are more polite.

I coach but also take photos when I can. As with anything like this, I'd suggest you ask, just to be polite (and players may well be interested in seeing/buying your shots). Also, as with all photography, check who owns the land you're on. Our club plays on Council owned land so, realistically, photography is allowed anyway. If you're photographing under 18s, although the law doesn't require it, speak to the team's coaches and/or parents and you shouldn't have a problem.

Well, I'm assuming that a 16year old kid photographing other kids of the same age will be considered "innocent", while an older gentleman doing the same without permission, will be chased with pitchforks and torches... That's the difference.

As long as you have the land owners permission you can take pics of kids all day long. Nothing stopping it. But it's general practice to ask of they mind having their photo taken.
