Is this a good price for Canon EF 75-300mm Lens?
Discussion
Hi All,
Currently on a training course in London (on a PC with internet access
) and the camera shop next door has offered me a Canon EF 75-300mm III USM lens for £199 inc. VAT. This seems like a very good price to me? Also have the non-USM version for £170, but want USM really?
It will be for my Canon EOS 300D - is this a good choice or should I try and find the IS (Image Stabiliser) version?
Please let me know - only here for 3 days and need to make a decision soon!
Cheers
Graham

I think IS is worth the extra, but it depends what you will be using the lens for.
Basically it enables you to shoot a couple of stops slower before camera shake becomes an issue, for example, with the lens set to 200 mm, you'd ideally want to shoot with a shutter speed of 1/250 to obtain a sharp image. With IS switched on, you should still get a sharp image with a speed of 1/90 (2 stops slower than 1/250).

I thought the IS was worth having....so I bought one
It's true it'll let you get away with a few shots as you can use a slower shutter speed and still not suffer with camera shake at the extremes of zoom (480mm when you factor in the 300D's 1.6x multiplication factor. but I tend to find the images a little soft.
If your going to spend serious cash on a long lens with IS, why not look at the new D O lens?
Ok, it's a fair bit more expensive, but much shorter than the 75/300 at full zoom and faster IS with L quality glass

Got my 75-300mm III USM for £140 from Jacobs (www.jacobsdigital.co.uk), though from the Nottingham shop and not the website.
