Sorry to butt in but I would recommend Wanaka (beautiful lakes and mountains) and a trip to milford sound which is absolutely stunning if a little bit out the way.

Camper or Car & Hotels? I can give you some tips if you tell me what you're looking for South Island is stunning, but then I loved the Bay of Islands as it was so chilled out. We did 2 weeks in the South and a week in the North.

Car and hotels/B&B type places.

Nothings booked yet apart from the flights.

We're there for about three 1/2 weeks starting in Auckland where we'll be for a couple of days at the start / end.

I'm primarily going for the photographs / scenery.


Did you go prebooked in places - or just turn up on spec ?

Much of NZ is photogenic but a lot of it, if not all of it, depends on the weather and time of day when you get to any particular location. For example if your tour of South Island includes a day at Nuggett Point, and it is raining all day, you won't any nice photos of it. So if you just head for the known 'coffee table' locations you may be disappointed; my advice is to keep your head swivelling all the time and try not to crash the car! Every side road or gateway can contain a great photo if you keep your wits about you.

Agree with this one. We were very lucky in having great weather for the majority of the holiday however, Akaroa was particularly grey and the last couple of days in the North Island were raining so photo opportunities were limited/poor.

Having lived in the UK for 3 1/2 years we haven't been home to NZ yet. So I'd just like to say thanks for making me incredibly homesick!

(P.S. I do have a list of tips for people going to NZ somewhere - I'll dig it out tomorrow and post it up for those who are interested or planning trips.)

Good set Rob, its hard getting decent pics and still having a holiday isnt it? especialy when your looking for good weather which often in December means tough landscapes, tho the lupins are an ace bonus.

Thirded. Taupo and Tongariro Park were completely clouded-over/wet when we visited, so we didn't see the LOTR volcanoes. But Mt Cook enjoyed crystal-clear skies a week later and I got some stunning photos.

Photogenic locations that we visited:-
North Island
- Coromandel Peninsula
- Orakei Korakao (sp?) near Rotorua
- (probably) Tongariro park
(Auckland was a bit of a disappointment all-round. Not a bad place, just a typical modern western city)

South Island
- most places?
- Christchurch
- all of the S. Alps
- Wanaka
- Qu'town
- Doubtful Sound
- ...even Akaroa was rather pretty.
