recommend me a micro 4/3 that will work with studio flash

I don't want an SLR. I don't like the bulk anymore - as I was not taking it anywhere.

I like the new 4/3 micro sized cameras - Lumix GF1 Olympus Pen adn the Sony NEX-5.

I have a small studio flash set up at home - nothing grand, just a big soft box and small slave for fill.

I used to connect the camera to the flash with a flash synch cable - which would trigger the main flash unit.

THe main flash (and slave) can be triggered by another flash - so I can possibly do without the cable connection.

BUT - when experimenting with a samsung compact usingn the on camera flash to trigger the studio flash, I found everything way under exposed.

So, what is the solution.

Or am I going to have to get an SLR again?

If it has a normal-sized hotshoe with a central contact then any cheap RF system should do it.

But by trying to mix a (stands by to be flamed) marketing toy with serious lighting requirements seems odd to me.

Have a look at the Canon G12, a friend has just purchased one and I must say I am very impressed with the feel of it and the image quality.

Also from the hot shoe you should be able to use a studio trigger.

I've had a similar issue with trying to use an off camera flash on my GF1. I think that even in manual mode these cameras always send out an initial TTL flash before the main - and that's what triggers the studio or off camera flash. I surfed this up and at least on my GF1 there's absolutely no way to turn off the TTL flash.

I know this isn't the answer to your question, more of a pointer - but if you do manage to suss out how to get an optical slave to fire on the main rather than initial TL flash, please let me know!! I'd dearly love to be able to do this.

Have you tried mounting something on the hotshoe of the GF1? Maybe a manual flash (non TTL) or a trigger? Would this not disable the onboard flash and TTL pre-flash?

Cheers all.

Googling seems to suggest RF flash triggers. The other was using the flash in the lowest power manual mode - apparently no pre-flash.

I will have a look at the G11 too.

Check the manual for your flashes. I remember somthing in mine about using a different setting on the flash that ignores the pre-flashes. Not needed it yet but I remember it being there.

Bought a GF1 with the 14-55 lens.


Will try it out with my studio flash and report findings.


Just need to find a cheap, fast portrait lens.
