Suction Mount Problem

I've bought one of these cheap camera suction mounts from Maplin:

... but I can't get it to work.

It has a collar which supposedly screws to create the suction once you've located it - I understand that bit - but it will only turn through 180 degrees until it's tight against the plastic body of the suction cup, which doesn't do anything at all. I can't see any apparent way of releasing more thread.

The examples of the same thing being used on Youtube (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYId5lZc6Jc ) show much more thread available for tightening - am I missing something very obvious?

What are you trying to stick it to?

Anything. It's not the surface (tried tables, mirrors, windows et c), it's the lack of enough thread to create a vacuum under it.

I've got one - or one very similar. Have you unscrewed it as far as possible before trying to attach it to the window or whatever?

It was faulty - exchanged it for one which (almost) works.
