£500 to spend on a DSLR

Nether my wife or I have any experience in photography but would like a good DSLR that's easy to use for beginners and have £500 to spend.
A couple or friends have recommended the Canon 450d or the 550d with the HD video. We have a good video camera but rarely use it so video is not really of much importance. I have however seen the 500d for £500 with an 18-55mm lens which seems to be a good compromise of the two getting the video over the 450d and slightly higher MP.
My question is, is it worth the extra £70-100 over the 450d?

I have a 500D, and bought with much the same thought process. The HD video is good but as the mic is on the camera you can hear it focussing. The few times I've used the video function I've locked the focus to keep it quiet and the results have been really good.
It's my first DSLR and I'd reccomend it. The only thing I'd say is to try this and the equivelent Nikon as the body size and menu systems are different and you may prefer one or the other. I picked the one that felt the best in my hand.

It's a slippery slope, be warned!
I got mine in September last year and now have: Sigma 10-20, Sigma 17-55, Canon 100mm macro and Canon 70-300. I'm also on my 2nd bag as the first one was no-where near big enough (get a rucksack, even if you don't fill it they're handy) and finally got a tripod.
It could be worse though, one of my mates recently got a Nikon D3s and two lenses, then a set of Lee filters. Total cost 9 grand, and he's not a proffesional photographer!
