How do you get these photos?

Hi expert photography forum!

So....does anyone know HOW one takes these sort of pictures? I want to get some done for a large range of clothing items and rather like this approach (especially given our clothes are a bit translucent and we need pics of teen and child sized garments.......)

Its the fact you can see inside the collars and sleeves and stuff.....

I guess they have a frame to hold the shirt on, which looks like it's been starched to cardboard like levels.

The rest is just very careful lighting from the RHS and slightly above. I'd guess a large aperture to get the whole thing crisp.

The support for the frame is then probably shopped out afterwards.

We use a specific type of mannequin. It has (only) a torso made of Polystyrene which we have modified by sawing a deeper neckline. It also has tubular adjustable plastic arms for posing. If I can find a link to where we purchased them, I'll post it but it was a good few years ago. It was from a dressmaker in Great Titchfield Street in london W1, but that's all I can remember.

Whip a quick path around the finished shot in Photoshop and drop it into a new background. Sorted.

I would imagine that the footage is shot with a placeholder product to generate authentic hand movements, impacts and grips and then simply edited away in post from the footage. I think the jargon term is a "Garbage Matte", as it describes the removal of an element from film. To facilitate, It's possible that the placeholder product would be either bright green or blue (like in green screen SFX), therefore making it easier to mask and remove.

That translucency may make things difficult as you'll see the mannequin beneath. If you can find / commission a body form in clear acrylic then that might work better.

Hi All,

thanks so much for the response.....I thought it might be long these lines.

We cant starch the things and they're all body fitting and meshed silk (medical device garments)so even clear acrylic wont really work unless its really really clear.

I think we might have to just go with real people and then shop out nipples etc to try and make them decent. The model agency doesn't think it's a problem but Im just a bit nervous!

Hi Night, your concerns duly noted, but I would seriously consider a clear Acrylic body form if you could rent one even for a test. They really do a good consistent job.

We shot this with a body former (with the arms) as previously mentioned. It might also save you the trouble of 'Shopping out the body parts.
