Well, new to me anyway:

www.photographyblog.com/reviews.php

I was trying to figure out why the Nikon D70 is not only cheaper but also slightly better specced than the D100. Seems the D100 may just have become extinct!

True the D70 is a really good piece of kit. We've just replaced Mrs CVP's F65 with a D70 and I have a D100.

I think the D70 is a really nicely designed piece of equipment. It's got all that a phoographer really needs on it and the resolution and image quality is superb.

I think there are only two things it will not do that a D100 will;

1. Remote release. You have to use a manual rather than electronic one. Means you're bu***ered if you wnat to do remote work and trigger from a reasonable distance away. D100 has the capability to take the elctonic release and all the remote firing kit that goes with it.

2. Extra battery / vertical release
D70 can't take the bolt on additional battery pack which has the vertical shutter release in it.

If these two things are not important to you the D70 seems much the best choice as it has some real advantages over the D100 like,

1. Faster write speed to the card
2. Can take a burst of somehting like 9 shots as opposed to three on the D100.

Thanks for the feedback CVP. I must have been doing too much research as I found 'Remote Controller ML-L3' in the specs at www.dpreview.com (as optional extra; about £20 I think) and the burst is 12 frames not 9.

I plan to get my paws on one today in Jessops to get the feel of it. It doesn't have the same comfy grip as the F70 and it looks a bit bland from the front, but there's nothing else like it for the price, so I shall just have to live with that. Now all I have to do is justify the expense to my credit card :-o

No worries, I think the remote controller you're referring to activates through the Infra red AF illumintor on the front of the camera.

So if you're on top of a mountain doing a group shot it's nice and easy to trigger the remote from a good old distance (10-15 yards or so) but you have to be in front of the camera to trigger it.

If you need to trigger from another angle, like

it can get a bit tricky ;-)
One thing's for certain you won't be disappointed by the quality of the images they are great. If you are a zoom person rather than fixed lenses, the 24-85mm slient wave zoom is a nice piece of kit with super fast AF.

Hi Chris,
I've already got two Nikkor lenses which I shall use: 24-50 and 70-300 (I realise that the focal lengths will increase by 1.5x, which is a pain but unavoidable). I'd like an extra wide angle eventually but may go the second-hand route for that.

Nowhere has D70s - too popular! My local Jessops gets ONE a week, two other places have waiting lists of up to a month - so getting my hands on one before I buy is going to be tricky...

Sorry, just back after a quick work trip.

D70's are a bit thin on the ground at the moment.

I'd try Grays of Westminster www.graysofwestminster.co.uk

They are a really good Nikon only dealer and very knowledgeable. They told Mrs CVP a D70 could take up to a month but managed to get one in for her in only a couple of weeks. I've been buying kit from them for a while and have been very pleased as a customer. Second hand you may find cheaper out there but the stuff from Grays will generally be well cared for.

I know what you mean re the 1.5* increase in effective focal length. My car shot was taken with my 20mm lens which should have given a really wide view, but on the D100 it is not so wide. There's the 14mm and also the new digital spec zoom which starts at 12mm but it's quite pricey.

On the flip side my 400mm is now simply superb for wildlife photos - swings and roundabouts and all that.

Cheers

Well I finally got to grips with the beasts yesterday in Ipswich. Amazingly Dixons had the D70 but not the D100, so then I went to Jessops where the opposite was true. However, the manager, about 22 and a complete 'photohead' broght in his own personal D70 and two monstrous Sigma lenses - so at last I could get the two cameras side by side.

On features it seems they're pretty equal, just differing in minor respects (D100 will do USB2 with a firmware upgrade). However the D70 has been 'dumbed down' a little, with girlie modes on the dial.

Both cameras felt very chunky and surprisingly deep from front to back. Didn't care much for the speckled all-over finish - still, I can always sand it off The D100 looks better from the front.

So now I just have to decide... or shall I keep the loot and stick with the F70 for a bit?

JFDI as my boss keeps telling us

Quality of pictures from both is simply superb. You'll not regret it.

Well maybe just a little, I still have a twinge of nostaligia for an F3 with motordrive. Built like a brick privvy and would easily last a lifetime.

Oh, that's worth a look, even with the dent to the prism.

I'd have some interesting explaining to do at home though

Mrs CVP - "so after badgering me about the benefits of AF and going digital you go and buy ANOTHER camera which is not only film but is manual???"

Me - "er...yep"

I think the running away bit fllowing confession could be good advice.

I might have to wait a while to spring this little purchase as I have just gone and bought myself a screen for editing at home and picked up a film scanner at the same time, so Mr wallet is feeling a bit poor at the mo.
