Odd ignition coil
Discussion
My engine cut out just before the emissions test at my MOT last friday
due to my ongoing and intermittent ignition problems. The MOT guy fixed it with a splodge of silicone on my coil(!) but stated, in his words, "Your coil is f
ed mate". (I still passed the MOT though!)
So I go down to the autofactors and give them the part number on the alternative parts list and he trawls through his system until he comes up with the correct part. I went to pick it up today but it looks like this...

Sorry about it still being in a bag but as you can see as soon as I open it, it is non-returnable. It has a bracket that looks distinctly like it will replace the round part of the current bracket, as well as the same connections on it. But it's so small!! It also has something looking like a ferrite transformer core around it.
Autofactor guy was sure this would work but does anyone here know if this will do the job? I'm slightly annoyed as I just repainted my coil bracket and now I won't use half of it. Oh and it doesn't look as shiny!

Its not a thing of beauty but its the same as mine on my S3c
. Although I have made an ally bracket as my original bracket was really rusty.

I think tvrgit also has the same one as I recall he mentioned it on a previous post some time ago (suspect he'll be along soon to put me right).
Works fine on mine so would think you'll be fine if your ok with its looks and the connection to your lead is correct!

high performance air cooled coil
I like the sound of that
Right well I was impatient and decided to fit the coil and it seems to work fine but I haven't taken it for a drive yet. The problem always came up when the car was hot so I'll have to wait and see after a drive.
Here is the coil fitted
If you want to tidy the wiring loom up a bit get some self amalgamating tape - its like a rubber material that bonds to itself - it looks just like the original loom tape once its on. You stretch it as you put it on. After a while (not very long) its all stuck to itself the only way to get it off is to cut it off, but it doesn't go gooey and horrible like insulating tape.
If you want a pic let me know - my loom was dropping to bits I had to fix loads of it.

Chris I found my engine loom sitting on the exhaust manifold(!) I stripped off TVR's excellent covering of gooey insulating tape and solid rubbery outer sheath to check the wires were ok. I still need to replace about 3 wires which are currently in a working condition due to insulating tape, but I do need something to tidy them up.
Piccy of that self amalgamating stuff would be good. I was looking at getting that spiral wound stuff but I thing tape would be better.
Ideally I would like to redo a large part of the loom but it is definitely not high on my list of things to do!

Not bought from here but its the same stuff. Electrical wholesalers are the best place to get it cheap - unlike maplin below at £9

A roll has two layers - a thin plastic layer seperating each revolution of the rubbery tape - otherwise you'd just have a blob of rubber!
It important that you stretch it as you wind it around the loom (or anything else for that matter).
I've used that Tower brand in the top link and it works well.
<I have edited this sentence I previously said it was hard work but I got the brands mixed up - its Thorsman tape thats hard work, Tower tape is really good>
Its really good handy stuff for all sorts of things (good for wrapping around connections on your satellite dish to keep the weather out).
edited to add cheap as anywhere in B&Q below

Yep mine looks exactly the same as your pic - although mine has an SAE (male) lead connector, not the female (DIN) connector in Orange Dodo's bag. I had a 2.9 Granada, and that was exactly the same.Barkychoc said:

I've used that Tower brand in the top link and it works OK but its quite hard to stretch - if you do a lot it makes your thumbs ache!

Just bought some amalgamating tape on line using chris' link as I've never used it before. then he added that you can get it at B&Q!!!

Just my opinion but I find proper loom tape better, basically this is like insulating tape but without the sticky stuff and a little more flexible. Because it is not sticky the loom once wrapped can be bent and flexed far better to run along chassis rails etc. then a little self amalgamating tape (or good old insulation tape) to make off the end.
s/a tape has too be pulled really tight to work, stretched to approx half its normal width, a real pita to work with (imho).

I understand what you're saying, but I still prefer sa tape.
There is a knack to applying it, you need to have the roll so that as you turn it around the cable it keeps it tight, if it unravels from the roll as you wind it around tthe cable its a right PITA, start again and turn the roll around. I'll try to do a drawing.
