My brakes are not the best! Often getting brake fade and concerns at corners! I want to replace them and was quoted 750 pounds for grooved disks and braded hoses fitted with gren stuff pads. That of course included VAT! I have read the forums and have seen that folks have upgraded themselves with kits. Can anyone suggest to me where I can purchase these kits and fit myself. Oh and did they get larger disks? Also where can I source braded hoses?
Cheers

For normal road use the standard brakes are more than adequate if they are in good condition. I suggest you get some new discs (£30), a set of DS2500 pads (£50), a couple of liters of DOT5.1 brake fluid, make sure the calipers sliders are working freely and the calipers themselves are not clogged with brake dust, flush the system thoroughly, then make sure you bed the new pads in properly. Also check the condition of the rear drums and shoes (assuming yours is pre-S4), replace if necessary (but these are less critical to the feel of the braking system).

Thanks for the info, is it worth changing the brake hoses to braded ones?

...and on the subject of brakes (sorry for the hijack )

The bible says the S brakes are based on Sierra. My '92 V8S is going to need new discs all round soon. Anyone know the exact details and a good source (if they're Ford then I suppose any Moter Factor)?

From my experinece with minis. Yes. I put them on all round on my mini and they made a vast improvement. Only down side is you can't crimp them when you are working on the system to prevent fluid loss.

Also check your wheels cylinders are not leaking. I replaced minie yesterday and I now have a handbrake!!

braking improved no end (IMHO) and not a big expense
also green stuff pads tend to need warming before they are effective and can warp cheap discs

best option is to go for griff 500 sized discs / calipers / pads for about 300 pounds ..

there's mention of it in the Sprint Chim guide I think

What size are the discs 240mm,283mm,290mm or 300mm. Have seen several types available.
The black diamond discs look great but I would prefer larger discs. What can you chaps suggest? My quote for 736.46 inc vat included 283mm vented grooved discs, brackets to suit calipers red dot front pads with braded hoses fitted. This was from Tower View Race Services. Any opinion welcome.
If anyone is interested they quoted me 6K-7K for twin turbo upgrade offering some 250BHP.

I think he's saying the best upgrade for an "S" is to fit Griff 500 brakes

No doubt Joolz will soon correct me

Hello Pies - I like your S, my mate acquathingybender started this conversation off - thanks for the clarification

Anyway, does anyone have any advice on upgrading the brakes on a Griff 500, braded hoses and green pads are already completed (with results) but the greens (i think) have already buckled my existing discs

Have to agree there.. They certainly seem to stop my S3 rather more rapidly than the old ones did..

Are they easy to fit...? Read somewhere they are just bolt on replacements...

No idea what mine are, or the diameter but I have noticed that they are grooved and drilled discs and that I have green stuff pads fitted and the car brakes very well indeed (I can leave braking at 70mph until the final marker approaching a roundabout). I guess they're not standard then!

www.webparts.co.uk/National/Buyguide/HTML/NBD002.HTM

Griff 500 disks are listed as the same as the standard S at 240 mm.

Ford Sierra Sapphire are listed as 283 mm, which may be an upgrade. Were these the disks used on some Griff 500's?

Are spacer plates required.

Z

www.webparts.co.uk/National/Appguide/Brake_frame.htm

Oh, now I see, there are also 260 mm disks listed for the Griff 500. Has anyone gone for the 283 mm Cossie disks, I suppose these not only need a larger calliper from the 500, but also a spacer plate to allow for the extra diameter.

Standard jobbies are the 240mm discs… as found on the Series one Escort RS Turbo. The major complaint of the owners of those cars (aside from them being nicked) were the poor brakes, so were upgraded on the Series two cars to 260mm…

Now, typical Ford used parts commonality, and they were taken from the Sierra…

I think you'll struggle to fit 283mm discs behind the standard wheels...

I have the larger Granada calipers, and 280mm or 290mm Black Diamond drilled and grooved discs and they are excellent. It stops well and in a straight line, highly recommended.

Just to make sure V8Smith, they are standard calipers with the 278 mm disks from a granada 24V Cossie. They must also require 24V Cossie calipers, as standard fitment Granni had 260 mm.

But, the Granadas all had 5 studs / wheel, are your hubs also different. The Sierra Cossies have 4 stud fitment and 283 mm disks. Calipers for these are also different.
