Fuel Pump......

Hi Guys, just got her through the MOT, driving to the local post office to get the road tax, and all of a sudden she cut out. Try to start her - no pump prime. Walk home, get the trusty Defender, battery and some leads, and test the pump at the road side - nothing!

One tow home later, and a call to Merlin Motorsport, and a new pump is on the way....hopefully, that will cure the problem...fingers crossed.....

Anything I should look out for when changing the pump?

You have checked the relay haven't you?

Yes - can hear it click - pump doesn't run when I power it direct, so pretty sure that's the problem...

i have a couple of stories - not much help but worth remembering for the day they might be

1. involving an MG midget removing a tank to do welding. As I lay under the car semi covered in petrol, my then father in law strolled in and knelt down fag in mouth and muttered 'how you getting on?'

not normally one to swear at the inlaws, I broke with tradition and hurled some abuse, followed by the tank onto the lawn!

moral of story - trust no inlaws with petrol

2. mercedes 190e, 2 weekends of cleaning injectors, replacing ignition system spending a fortune

moral of storey - dont trust a fuel guage.

Problem solved - just fitted a new fuel pump - very fiddly, but straight forward. Considering the old one was almost 20 years old, and the car had been idle for 4 years, it's not surprising it gave up!
