Hi All

Just thinking how to get more air through the front of the car, has anybody changed the front grill area to do this, I have a few things under the bonnet and not sure if there will be enough air to go around.
I was thinking of making a carbon splitter to go into the front of the bonnet but not come up with anything as yet.
Picture shows what fits under the front and still room for the air filters to fit.

Wow thats a lot of radiators!!

I've been looking at getting more air in to the radiator too. As I see it there are three things you can do to help are get more air in the front, get the air out the engine bay faster and direct the flow in the engine bay better to reduce turbulent losses.

Getting air in faster can only be done with bigger holes or high pressure (have you tried driving faster!?) so a splitter would be good for that.

The air only has one escape at the moment which is out the bottom of the engine bay and down the transmission tunnel. The air isn't going to be low pressure under the car so the air is going to have to fight to get out. Having had a gearstick gaiter that untucked itself all the time I can tell you the air in the transmission tunnel is pretty high pressure.

A splitter should reduce the pressure under the car too. A few vortex generators on the bottom of the splitter may help the air get out faster too but that is more of a guess.

There probably isn't any space for a cowling over your radiators is there. Guiding the air to a low pressure area to be sucked out would really help but I have no idea where to do that. There isn't enough space and I think some holes would need cutting in the car.

Those are my ponderings on the matter anyway. Haven't actually done anything though so would be interesting to see the effect a splitter would have.

as I remember this is on an s1 shell? now presumably you have had to think about useing a v8 bonnet or modifying the existing bonnet to allow for the extra height if this is the case I think I might set at it with the grinder then fashion a huge scoop out of grp. or what about opening up the 'mouth' by cutting away the piece that separates the upper and lower grill might be a bit cobra esque, I think someone actually posted some drawings of alternative grill ideas. depends how pure you want it to look I guess good luck.

also what about some vents on the wings to let hot air out.

Hi All.
I was thinking of bonnet scoops to allow a through air venturi type so the air from the bonnet pulls the air through the front and down under the car, not sure if it will work or not but I was not thinking of cutting the front just yet.
Will do a search for the bonnet mod post.

The oil cooler should go at the back. (Put the things you want coolest at the front of the stack - in this case the charge cooler - and the hottest things at the back - in the case the oil cooler.)

I recommend that you put a duct between the front opening and the main radiator. Because of the way the bonnet opens, the top part must be attached top the bonnet but the sides and bottom can be attached to the radiator. (From memory, attaching the whole thing to the bonnet was also an option.)

Unless you have increased the width of the radiator dramatically, the rad will not fill the whole width of the bonnet. On mine I put a box to provide a cold air intake on the nearside and a box to feel air to the oil cooler on the offside. I forget what the exact air intake OD is but it is around 80mm, and it just needs a slight dog leg to get past the wheel arch inner.

I fitted a naff looking but extremely effective front spoiler which increased the air pressure on the front of the opening and reduced pressure in the engine bay so that ram air cooling is boosted at high speed. I also had some extraction vents cut into the bonnet about half way back, these are in a low pressure zone and pull tons of hot air out of the engine bay at speed and also let hot air out when it is stationary.

Is this the thread mentioned earlier?

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Have you condidered using the air intakes behind the grille (usually used to feed the fresh vents on the centre dash) to feed air to one of the coolers and come up with another option for the ventilation? How about fitting a fan to the oil cooler and/or the the charge cooler?

I’m surprised the bonnet closes with all that hardware in front of the rad. It obviously does though and I’m sure I’m not the only one who can’t wait to see the finished project; it looks amazing.

Hi All
The bonnet closes and there is still lots of room left. I put the bonnet on and run some wire up to the bonnet to make a frame, lifted bonnet off and if its inside the frame it fits, I had to cut the bottom of the bonnet a bit where it lifts on the hinges but only a small bit, I have 2 air boxes to fit and they fit but will have to do some thinking re the mounting locations.

Today has been about steering mountings, I have a Corsa C EPS unit so needs new mounts making, I found the old mount was full of cracks as it is made of thin 3/4 box, would not have wanted that to go on a bend.

Many Thanks for the link, I have been trying but the search was not working,
