Is it slow...?
Discussion
Can any S1 one owners give me an idea of what sort of top speeds they are getting (obviously this would never be done on our country's highways and byways!). I have no real problem with acceleration but once I get past 100 nothing happens. 5th gear is rendered essentially useless! Any ideas? Am I just expecting too much!
well the aerodynamics of the S (and for that matter most of the pre 2000 TVRs) are pretty crap so over 100mph some of the smaller engined ones will suffer. Up to that sort of speed my chim isnt far off the pace of the 5 litre ones but after about 80mph they wave cheerio.
My S didnt have strong performance over 100 and mine was considered a very strong performing car. The speed would creep up slowly and get towards 130mph eventually. In the Chim you feel the acceleration still at 100mph and it gains a lot quicker.

Perhaps my speedo is cr*p but it suggested that I was doing 140 "on a private road" a few weeks ago and it was extremely wandering and felt like I was going to take off. That was with the hood on but I have noticed that it starts to feel like an effort to get over 110 with the hood off.

Ditto.
Probably see 115 roof down and 125 roof up.
Certainly no trouble getting the other side of 100 though.
Speedo checked exact
at 130kph by GPS (but not checked higher) (didnt fancy driving at >120 with a handheld GPS
)The most accurate way of checking your cars performance figures is to test it against the rolling acceleration in 4th
From the bible
S1 S2 V8s
30-50mph 8.8s 7.6s 6.1s
40-60mph 9.1 7.6 6.0s
50-70mph 9.7 7.7 6.0s
This is dead easy and safe to do on a dual carriageway
and fairly accurate and easier on the clutch and tyres.
Following the rebuild my S1 average around 8secs so I am well pleased and will check it again when its done another 5,000 miles when the engine will be getting nicely lossened up with 10,000 since the rebuild.

when i first got my s1.5it buzzed up to 130mph no probs then i could not get above 90mph. It went off to get sorted and they found out that three cylinders on the right hand bank as you sit in the car were not fireing . dont know if that helps.
Three... !?? that is that whole side of the engine. ! I'm amazed it ran at all...!?
My S1 gets to 95 - 100 ok (difficult to tell exactly as the needle is pretty bouncy) but doesn't seem to want to go beyond that, registers just over 4k revs in 5th at that speed. I've not been able to get it to red line in 4th or 5th, but it will fine in the other gears. Pushing it in 2nd to 3rd goes like a spanked whippet. All driving done with the hood down.
