Hi guys, urgent help is required!

Nick's bonnet pins seem to have developed the ability to loosen themselves from the bonnet; if he tightens them more onto the bonnet, they lock into the catches on the car and then won't open. He spent 4 hours today trying to fix it, swapped the catch and pin from the boot (which are the same as the bonnet ones), but has had no success.

Out of desperation, he is looking to replace all of the catches, cables, and pins. Does anyone know what each part is from? TVR Car Parts CAN get them, but it will take 2 weeks for them to get here and he's currently car-less if the TVR is rendered undriveable due to a loose bonnet.

Would of thought if they are aligned correctly they should not lock once tight. I think the catches can be a bit fiddly to get lined up, masking tape method over holes for centralising seems to work well. Best of luck!

I can't quite figure out what that means, but I suspect it means he hasn't figured out how the large hex spring base plate and the rear nut are locked together to clamp the pin onto the bonnet. Unless the latch assembly is damaged I doubt there will be any benefit to replacing it and I suspect the problem is just that he's doing it wrong.

No guys, he knows EXACTLY how these catches work, he and his tutors spend hours sorting it the first time round. It's been a problem for a while now. Does anyone know what they're off?

I found this in the Search function, not cheap.

I got mine from the supplier you mentioned, only problem is the Pin is a little bit on the short side.

In that case I'm puzzled what the problem is. If they're fitted properly there's no way for them to move relative to the bonnet, and they shouldn't need to be left loose in order to release from the latch mechanism. All I can think is that either the plate attaching them to the bonnet is flexing, or they're being fitted in the wrong position and relying on some flex somewhere to enable them to release. Despite your assurance, it seems likely to me that these are assembly/adjustment problems that are not likely to be helped by swapping components.

The problem here maybe that the pins are too short and once pressed closed, the springs hold them so tightly into the catches that they jam. As mentioned above, make up some longer ones at college. This will allow for a lot more adjustment to how tightly they hold the bonnet down once closed.

I see what you saying, King Fisher is the large Hex nut/plate seized on the pin.? Mine was, that's why i got another one . They are a real pain to fit because there is hardly any room to fit the nut and washer the other side of the bracket in the bonnet. The problem with the new one's are that they have a short pin, and you end up winding the pin up so you can just about get a nut and washer on. What are the striker plates like in the top of the Wing.?

The large hex nut isn't seized no. One had to be modified as it had threaded, so Nick filed the middle out, then welded an M10 nut into the middle to fix it. They also had to cut one of the springs on the pins to get it to close. It worked, for 3 months.

The catches seem ok. They've been removed and cleaned. The bonnet cable has snapped though, but Nick's been pulling each cable individually and that's worked for over a year!

As for them being too short, that is a real possibility. Is a buyable alternative available, or is it time to get busy on t'lathe?

Does Nick get a Resounding click when he closes the Bonnet on both sides?. If not i would align the Bonnet Hinges first. Then getting some Masking Tape and applying it on the top of the Striker Plates to see if you can see where the pins meet the Plate. I hope that makes sense . nerd

Yep, he gets a nice click every time. The left pin is absolutely fine, but the right one just doesn't want to work. It was an issue BEFORE he rebuilt the car and removed and realigned the bonnet, which suggests it's not to do with the bonnet alignment. He quite likes the sound of making one, he did note that if the pin itself was 5mm longer it'd travel further into the nyloc that holds the pin onto the bonnet, along with the hexnut on the underside.
