Brake hoses - why two at the front?

Can someone explain to me why the front brakes have the arrangement with the two flexible hoses? I was reassembling the old parts to work out how to fit the new parts, and it looked like I could fit the longer hoses (I have the Goodridge kit) directly to the stub axle, and dispense with the bracket and the shorter hose to the caliper. I'm worried that I'm missing something important though! I've gone through the many threads about brake hoses, but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for.

I have one long hose either side on my car, a far neater set up. But hose must, of course, be plenty long enough to allow for full steering and suspension movement.

Me too - the hose also has to be secured and supported so it can't flap around or get caught up in anything.
