V8 Starter problem
Discussion
Happy New Year all,
Having had unresolved intermittent starting problems at the back end of last year, I have a list of jobs to do to resolve this once and for all. However, I’m no expert, so advice is always appreciated!
The battery is new and good, so I think the first job this year will be to replace the earth straps and give the wiring generally a good seeing to. I’ve seen that a relay between the battery and the starter motor might be a sensible option.
Then I plan to replace the starter motor. That might be overkill, but I don’t know old it is, I plan to keep the car as long as possible and so see it as an “upgrade”. Racetech have a high power starter at £135 + VAT, and there appear to be other hi-torque geared alternatives. Is that sensible or really totally unnecessary? Any recommendations if the former?
One thing that has recently struck me is that the problem started after I had work done at a TVR garage. The exhaust gaskets were replaced, and they advised leaving off the wrap that had previously been on the manifolds, as they said it has a tendency to create condensation. I am wondering whether the additional heat from the manifold may have had an effect on the solenoid. Should I fit a heat shield?
Thanks.

Heat shield certainly won't do any harm although those new starters are smaller so should be a little further from exhaust and get a bit more air around it?
Mine always starts but takes a good 5 to 10 seconds of turning over and if i touch the pedal no chance.
I took this as normal but maby a starter with more beef would help ?
If yours only started playing up after work then deff check all wires etc as it does seem like a poss knock on effect or just sods law lol
