Brake Caliper!!
Discussion
I have dismantled the front suspension, steering and brakes from my S3 to sort out a few problems (seized track rod ends, wear in one balljoint and easier access to engine mountings. This is in anticipation of out trip to Spa in May. It has been the usual story of releasing tight/ seized fastenings and ages cleaning components and chassis for a repaint. All OK so far except the parts bill keeps increasing - the discs looked Ok until I measured them and they are nearly on bottom size. But GSF are advertising Brembo discs at £10.50 each so not the end of the world. Obviously new pads as well - I'll go for Mintex standard pads. Then I thought that I would release the caliper bleed screws while they were off the car. One was fine but the nearside.... I rounded off the hex and stillsons etc. would not move it. So I welded a washer and an old nut (19mm A/F) onto it and managed to break the screw off flush with the caliper. Now, at this stage it is best to stop and chop it in for a reman unit but being a bloke and not to be defeated, I decided to drill out the bleed nipple . You've guessed - I managed to drill off centre and scrap a good caliper. So has anyone a reasonable caliper locally or should I just go for a £45 recon? Chassis and wishbones look good after their first coat of paint so all is not lost.
