Bonnet Stay

Hi Guys,
Just wondering what options have been explored for the bonnet stay?
I have an aluminium rod with ball/socket at the bonnet end. I never find it very secure, and also the clip for when it is in the lowered position has disappeared so I thought its time to change it.

This has been improved since by fitting a strut from (I think) a Chim boot. S&D changed it for me when I had the bonnet replaced. Works a treat.

I would like something more secure though. I have had the bonnet drop unexpectedly with the slightest disturbance.
I usually now just jack the front up so that I can rest the bonnet fully forward.

It would probably be frowned upon here, but the previous owner to me made a simple cable tie loop which slides up the stay and just about goes around the bonnet spring piece and stops the stay from failing. I have to say, its simple, but effective. If I could be bothered i'd probably look for an alternative like yourself, but as I said - its a simple enough solution and works.

Some of us fitted Jag XJS struts.
They tend to be quite powerful so you need the hinges to be free of unwanted movement or the strut will pull the bonnet out of line and make it difficult to release.
Mine is disconnected but easily reconnected when I want to lock it open.

It was an XJ strut I had originally and had to de-pressurise because it was too powerful. Before I fitted the gas strut I used the cable tie bodge and it worked fine – simple, cheap and effective. What more could you want?

Heres one I made a little while ago, put a slight bend to tension the hook into the bonnet socket so it couldnt just slip out, required a deliberate amount of force


8mm rod with 8mm rose joint, bit of a bend and a bit of thread creation!!



domed tap washer kept the stay from sliding out of the clip!

Thanks for the replies, I will have a look at the options.
Not be this weekend though, I am hitting the big 4-0 so intend to go out with a bang!
