Clutch Master Cylinder

Hi, First gear selection very difficult on my S3 (and other gears pretty sticky), so assumed clutch was on the way out.
However, while tinkering this morning, I noticed a small drip of fluid in footwell from cluth Master.
Does Master cylinder need replacing or can seals be changed?

Where would I find a replacement Master Cylinder?

You probably only need a seal kit, got mine from Power Track Products a couple of years ago and its still OK. They are very helpful an will advise exactly what you need. You can also buy a plastic cap to replace steel one if its not in good condition.

The master Cylinder is only about a tenner so it makes sense to just replace the whole thing. I had a leaky slave so replaced the entire system, master, slave and pipe for about £25.

On a similar vein I was forced to cut off a nut holding the rear brake cylinder on recently so went to find out how much a replacement was. When I found out they were less than £7 each I just replaced both cylinders on both sides.

Thanks for the info guys. Seal kit from Power Tracks is £12 plus VAT. Seems reasonable to me.

Struggling to see how you replaced the lot for £25??

New Master Cylinder is £50 plus VAT.

Will the Landrover Cylinder be a straight swap for my existing one?

In other words, will the pipe union fit?

I don't want to start flaring pipes etc.

No it won't I can't remember the difference but needed to get a new pipe made up for mine.. Not worth it in hindsight IMHO.

that said what condition is your pipe in perhaps it could do with being replaced.?

Here is the thread I started when I did the swap. I changed everything over because it all looked very manky. If I remember correctly the new master has the same thread as the old slave so I reused that connector and bought a new connector for my new slave cylinder off eBay.

Although I made the pipe up myself in the end my local garage said they would make the pipe up for me if I gave them the ends and a donation to their tea fund.

I also decided to replace the whole lot as orange dodo,new slave cylnder
master cylnder and 3/16 pipe and fittings i did find that u will have to
change over the piston rod on the master as the one i bought had a diffrent size thread to the adjustable clevis hope this helps nige.
master cylnder part no STC100410G 3/8 UNF
slave cylnder part no 591231 7/16 UNF
Fitted to 3/16 pipe

3/16 is brake pipe, should be 1/4"

Will no doubt still work but could make clutch operation "heavier" as you are trying to push same amount of fluid down a smaller pipe

A few people have said the same but the clutch feels the same to me
and works perfect no probs nige.

My pipe was already 3/16" so I replaced it with the same. Did wonder about the size but decided it couldn't matter that much.
