Number plate lamp?!

During today's MoT (which it passed
) the examiner noticed that the number plate lamp wasn't working so the lens was removed in anticipation of changing the bulb. However, once the lens was removed the festoon bulb just fell out leaving 2 wires with some sort of leaf spring on each end. Eventually, we worked out one way of getting it back together was by accessing from inside the boot and fitting the leaf springs/terminals as per the photo (rear of car at the bottom).
The problem with this is that the bulb isn't exactly directly over the lens. If I assemble it the other way round to the photo, the bulb is pretty close to the boot carpet/lining which has a hole in it in this area.
So the question is - is this the correct lampholder arrangement (is anything missing like a cover or reflector) and have we re-assembled it correctly?
If not, what's the way to go?

Yep, that looks about right, no cover and even with bulb "off-set" some light shines through.

I have just bought two nice simple number plate lights from Car Builder Solutions to replace the grotty single lamp on my S1. They are at least as good as the oiginals and fitting two will get the plate illuminated as it should be. Good value for money.
