I have A 944 S2 Which is a great allrounder, 210 bhp
amazing handling and i think great looks, but the engine sounds like a dyson cleaner and i fancy a bit of wind in the hair driving and the tvr engine note.
has anyone here ever owned both and sampled the pro,s and con,s.
i ,m thinking maybe that the 944 might be missed when the weathers crap and possible tvr realiability problems might drive me mad over the year.
ideally i would love to own both
opions plse.

i would really say go for a test drive. I loved my S3 but its a whole different world to that of the 944 and the handling isn't in the same league.

We had a 944 which was chopped in for a Griff500, not an S3 but a TVR

944

Beautiful handling - very progressive beyond the limit, a real pussycat.

Ultra reliable, cheap servicing (specialist)

Griff

Raw, physical car to drive, edgy, difficult near and beyond the limit. Fast (very). Handling not as good as 944, very tricky in the wet

Reliable, one warranty claim in 20months, off road for 1 day, no breakdowns, serving expensive (dealer)

An occassion whenever you drove it.

An S3 will be somewhere in the middle.

Yes--I owned a 944S2 Cabriolet--beautifully built car and very very reliable but,if I am allowed to say this, essentially a ladies car in the Mazda MX5 class. If you get a Porker it has to be a 911 preferably the turbo. Now I have an S3 and this is certainly no rich housewife's car--its build quality is adequate but does not compare with that of the porker BUT it has CHARISMA oozing from every pore--heads turn now and they never never did with the porker--also its quite a bit quicker due to the lighter weight--I'll put it this way--if I had to make a very long journey give me the porker and a stack of CDs--but evry other time the S3 wins hands down

Or get yourself over to the National S meet on the 15th of Aug at Silverstone, there will be 60+ S series cars to look at!! most will be up for taking you for a spin. Maybe take a spin with podie and also a non chipped S3 to see the difference as Podies will be among the better/faster S3's!

I've had a 924 Turbo, a 944, a TVR S3c and now a Griff 500. It’s difficult to make comparisons but let's try. The 944 was a disappointment performance wise compared to the 924 turbo, somehow although it was as smooth as silk it always felt sluggish and I immediately hankered for a 944 Turbo. Build wise, both Porsches were of a high quality but had their faults, the heater matrix on the 944 leaked coolant all over the carpets and 924 T chewed up discs. By contrast the S3c felt like a go-kart in comparison to the big heavy 944. Probably straight line performance was between the 924 Turbo and the 944 but because it is felt so much lighter it was much more fun to drive. Any S is going to be getting on a bit now, so go for the newest you can find, the S4 ideally as it had the discs all round and a few other niceties. If you are happy with your 944 why not try a 944 Cabrio? If, on the other hand, you are feeling adventurous go for a V8S and get the best of all worlds. Rich...
