does yours whine

hi all having a bit of a problem with my car,i have replaced the petrol pump for a new one because the old one made aloud whining noise and died underload. with the new pump on the car still keeps dying underload,brought car as a non runner so unsure if the new pump should be making this noise.any thoughts or advice would be welcome as pump is under garantee.

If the problem has repeated itself then probably never was the pump. Need to look for a blockage elsewher, this might make the pump whine if it was working too hard to force fuel through and would definitely die under load. Old fashioned way is to disconnect pipes and blow down them (get rid of the fuel first)! Check and replace the filters as well is a good start.

when i first brought the car i had to clean pipes and injectors,as the car had been standing and was full of water.so i blew and cleaned the lines out also fitted new fuel filter,fuel pump and pump still whines is this normal.

You haven't by some chance kinked a pipe along the way and restricted the flow??

no lines are all aok as i had to drain fuel and access water from engine end by using fuel pump to flush it through.the reason i am asking for help is when i am running the engine it seems to have an intermitent missfire,as i have replaced all electrical components this is why im inquring about the fuel pump as it only happens when driving the car. at the end of my teather

No experience on those engines myself but might help others if you can confirm which engine.

Not an expert, but how about an air leak in the EFI unit, or the pipes feeding it?

yes its been tested for air leeks,and has passed mot on emmissions although i had to nurse it there and back.

thanks for info gerald will bear it in mind the only problem i have it will not go no further than the top of my road so getting it there would be a problem.i will list a run down of what i have already done to it that will be a very long list.im just about to go into my garden for a swim lol

Hi,

I replaced my fuel pump with a new one on my S3 2.9 three months ago now and it has always made a whine however works fine so all good (my previous car made this noise as well).

The replacement pump and filter was added due to some water entering the fuel tank due to a dodgy filler cap and the engine would run however cut out or 'stutter' then drive normal. So if yours been standing for a while then drain and replace parts.

If air filter not good or has holes then the car will run 'lean' and 'stutter' on pulling.

my car is fitted with 2 k and n filters as new condition the mot tester said it was running a bit on the lean side but when checking plugs always seem to be black and sooty. as for the fuel pump on tick over or revving engine no noise from the pump,but when driving the car its loud and quite annoying nearly as loud as the exhaust.thanks for advice gerald as a last resort i will get help in.

Just a wild idea is the pump clamped witout a rubber seat between pump and clamp and a fuel damper fitted (the bit on the end with a sideways outlet)

I might be barking up the wrong tree but...
I had the same intermitent symptoms(whining noise, rough running and stalling)traced to the pcv valve.
You can find this, on drivers side rocker cover, it sits in a gromit conected to a breather hose from the plenum chamber.I tried to clean it in petrol over night,no luck there! A new valve and gromit from Burton power has fixed the problem.
I think the spring was weak, the vibrating disc sounds just like a sticking motor. It controls air flow from the engine = mixture problems when at fault.

Thats just my thoughts hope it helps.

My old tank had a filter in the sump, cover plate bolted on to the sump to replace / clean filter, Just a shot in the dark

hi ken what your saying about the pcv valve i have checked mine it seems to be ok is there any way you can test them, i seem to recall that they had the same problem on the old cortinas and granada,my problem is i have spent so much on replacing parts, that it's becoming a joke

hi Alan i have read about this before,i believe there is a locking ring on the bottom and when you remove it you find a filter, i will look into this tomorrow and let you know how i get on
