What should I do with regard to registration transfers?

Pay for everything up front (to a private person) and the DVLA transfer fee. I'm not so comfortable doing this as the number may not be available or even his to sell?

Or, should I pay the DVLA fee only to the seller and the agreed price for the number on completion of the transfer?

The latter is what I have suggested but am I being unreasonable in suggesting this?

Your advice is much appreciated.

Depends where you are buying from is it from Ebay???

I would send two cheques to him, one with his name on it for the plate and one with Pay 'DVLA' on it for the transfer! Thats the normal way to do it! This way you have his address if he doesnt arrange the plate. This is the way I just sold a plate, it was on Ebay!

The DVLA have a V booklet available from the larger Post Office on what to do when Buying/Selling/Transfering plates.
They do say to make certain first that the Seller does in fact own the plate.
Not every Post Office has this booklet, I had to phone DVLA Swansea and they put it in the post.

Kevin, you might want to try www.dvla-som.co.uk; I seem to remember there being a couple of useful booklets to download when I bought my plate. Adrian
