Us little brothers can have our own debate eh!

Timed mine after the engine rebuild at approx. 6 secs.

Not greatly scientific, just used the countdown timer set to 7 seconds on my watch and I hit 60 roughly a second before it bleeped ......with an almost empty tank and just me in the car.

I think it was a fair bit slower (felt like it) prior to skimming and gas flowing the heads.

I'd be seriously amazed if an S did it in 6 ! Don't forget the optimism of the speedo too..

I would estimate the 2.8 to be around 8 and a half just from how it feels driving it.

Cheers

I recon I could make it in about 8 seconds, 3 up, with someone else doing the gears for me, and a midget on the shelf poking the clutch with a brolly so I can do my focusing on the steering bit.

edited to say: Of course, I'd need help finding the right thread to report back in. Soz mate

The quoted 0-60 time for an S is 6.5s IIRC and I reckon now mine has had a bit of engine work it's not that far off.

IIRC the time quoted when the 2.8 came out was 7 sec to 60mph and the quoted time for the 2.9 was 6.8 sec. I will check one of my old magazines tonight.

I think you'd find 6.5 for a standard one to be a bit optimistic too to be honest. I may be proved wrong, but 6.5 is pretty quick..

its all pub talk anyway

Quoted figure for 2.9S is 6.9 secs

I had a tussle with an Audi TT, neck and neck upto around 100mph when pulled out in front of us, Audi beat my down to 70mph

I reckon it was only the 180 bhp audi though, still felt good, 15 year old technology against upto date stuff

theres no way the s does under 7.5 secs to sixty in my opion, tvr were always exagerating there figures and my porsche 944 s2 is quoted at 6.5 and feels like it too,ie much quicker and by 100 mph the tvr is miles behind ,i,ve experienced both.
Still want a tvr s though

INDEPENDENT tests show

S1 was between 7 and 7.6sec for 0-60
S2 about 7 sec

From the tests in the magazines of the time that I have:

Fast Lane Nov 87: Doesn't actually test the 0-60 but says 7 secs feels right, car interior is very different than the one used by the other mags below. Probably one of the first 20 made.

Fast Lane June 88: Quotes exactly 7.0 secs with passenger and full tank. And 19 secs to 100.

Car June 88: Quote 6.7 secs, from the pic in the article it appears to be the same car as the one used by Fast Lane above, the engine shot shows it fitted with the 2.8. The 87 FL article used an earlier car.

MotorSport Sept 88: Quotes 7.4 and uses the same car as the two June articles.

So we have 7.0, 6.7, 7.4 giving an average of 7.0

I've had mine UniChipped so not a true 2.9i, however had a series of drags against an enthusiast in a Renault 5 GT Turbo with uprated turbo & dump valve (i could hear it 'letting off' at every change)

I beat him every time, about 4-5 runs down various duel carriageways 30-100 & then back down for the next one. Great fun and with the Renault quoted as 7.5 to 60 when new & his being uprated, i'm sure i'm hitting around 6.5 - 6.8 secs.

0-100 is improved by the Unichip thanks to superb torque in 4th so i reckon 17 secs now.

I have to say he was a great sport & a rarity for a 'bolt on boy' - not mad.

See you all tomorrow
