How big a job is a cam change on a v8,also are they all more or less knackered by 60,000 miles or so.
Is this a diy able job, if not how many workshop hrs for a pro??

This can be a fairly difficult job to do properly. Just changing the cam and lifters is not difficult if you are used to doing that sort of thing, but setting the backlash on the lifters is supposed to be a bit tricky. I don’t think it is technically that tough (you just have to insert shims, or grind off where needed. But, if it is your first time and you cock it up it could end up costing you.

My favoured approach for doing this job would be to junk the hydraulic lifters, get a solid set and install adjustable rockers. This means you could have an upgrade of cam at the same time. Of course the cost of doing this may work out more (especially if you go for roller rockers), and you will have to set the tappets every 5000 miles (I actually enjoy doing things like that anyway :hammer: )

A few of the other guys may disagree and I will be interested to see what they say.

I cannot give estimates of the time it will take. I told Mrs Z that my body off restoration of the chassis would take 1 month More like five

Another thought, if you don’t get much response here try ringing one of the pros and having a discussion with them. There are a few help lines listed in sprint.

Have fun,
