I had the S up on the ramps at ATS on saturday and I had a nose around and noticed that the gearbox on my S2 has a good coating of oil that appears to have leaked from above, it's all over the side of the box including the clutch slave cylinder on the driver side. It doesn't drop any oil so either it has mostly leaked out or been repaired in the past but not cleaned up? Is there a seal or anything that may have failed to cause this?

Mine seems to be like that when I had a look under it. Lot's of oil on the box, but it's never leaked oil.
Strange that eh Chris, where does it come from?
Mine looks wet but there's nothing at all on the exhaust or the garage floor. I think I'll clean it all off with some Jizer degreaser and see if returns, I had the oil level in the box checked when she went for MOT and it was fine a few months ago, hasn't really done many miles since then.
If this is the Ford gearbox, there is a cover plate on top, held in place with a series of 8mm bolts. If even slighly loose, the force of the oil spun off the gears will lift the plate and give a leak. Well worth checking, but access is not easy. Try reaching from above on the pax side (get the light right and you can just see the first couple of bolts).
