Electric windows retrofit to an S1

I've just been quoted what I consider to be a very reasonable price to have electric windows fitted to my S1.
It currently has manual windows but the driver's one has broken, so this was one of my options..

Has anyone been down this route before? I just wondered if there was anything "really difficult" about the process that I could anticipate?

Actually, TBH the price is bang on the money for me so I think I'll just drop the car off witht hem and let them crack on.

Depends what you're getting?

i'm going back a bit but before 'leccy windows were common place cheap kits were available that fitted on the outside of the door card in place of the winder handle, not sure how the power got to them ?

This is exactly what I was thinking of - they were wired in with an ignition feed and earth, and fitted on to the splines in place of the winder. The switch was built into the motor box on the outside of the door.

Later versions fitted inside the door card, with a flexi-drive thingy that turned the original winder splines, with a much smaller box over the splines, that a didn't smack you in the knee when you shut the door.

If that's what you're getting, it won't repair any of the problems with your existing mechanism.

If you're getting a custom built electric window setup that replaces the existing mechanism, then (a) where from and (b) how much? (My car has leccy windows already so I'm not that bothered, but others might be).

LOL - I had forgotten about those kits, weren't they made by MOSS or something similar? No it's definitely not one of them, they were terrible when they came out and would be just as bad now LOL. Although having said that I've just googled universal electric window kits and was surprised to see they still exist.

No this is a retrofit of the genuine TVR electric window mechanism, motor, switches, limiters etc as fitted to the S2 etc into my S1.

The work would be undertaken by David Gerald so I am confident the quality would be good and when I was discussing it with my good lady on the weekend I guessed at ~£600. The price I've been quaoted is £400-500 plus VAT so I'm happy with that.

I just need to arrange taking the car in and leaving it there now - might be a week or so from now :-)

Can you not get a couple of second hand doors off an S2 breaker complete with motors etc?

There's more to it than just the motors.. I priced up the mechanism in the past and it'd be £150 a door for new ones, then the switches, the loom, the fitting, setting limits etc, etc.

Honestly, I'm pretty comfortable with the quoted price, it's exactly what I expected and a worthwhile "investment" for me as I'll get that level of enjoyment out of it over the next year or so..

Quite honestly I wouldn't bother; you are only storing up trouble, I would have manual ones on my V8S like a shot if it could be easily done.

I know what you mean but as everything will be "brand new" I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem any time soon. And I'll keep the old manual mechanisms "just in case"... once the spare driver's side one I ordered has arrived!

Jules I would put a couple of relays on each side of the switch to take the heavy current. I did this on my car and now the motor runs a lot better and the switch contacts will be protected.
